Applicant Eligibility

Our program seeks students who have an interest in the field of medicine and want to learn more about emergency medicine and clinical research. We aim to maintain a program with only the most diligent, respectful, and dedicated students. When applying, please keep in mind that we hold our members to very high standards. Our program has a one-year minimum commitment starting after training is completed which includes holidays and summer breaks. Most of our members are undergraduate students at UCLA, but we also admit post-grad and graduate students, as well as students from other universities.

Please note that all applicants accepted into the program will undergo thorough background checks at no cost to the applicant. Applicants are also required to provide proof of current vaccines and TB test results. Both of these requirements must be met before volunteering in the hospital.

Applicants with active commitments through the UCLA Health Sciences (UHS) Volunteer Office must fulfill the minimum commitment of hours with their current assignment before applying to the program. For UHS-specific programs and assignments, the minimum commitment is 50 hours. For other volunteer programs, please check with the designated volunteer coordinator. This policy will be strictly enforced, and no exceptions will be made.

Application Cycle Information

Emergency Medicine Research Associates recruits during Fall and Spring quarters of each academic year. Our next recruitment will take place in Fall 2024. The application process consists of an online application, followed by primary and secondary interviews. At the beginning of each recruitment cycle, we hold two information sessions to provide general program details and application deadlines. While not mandatory, we highly encourage prospective members to attend.

Fall 2024 Information Sessions:

  • Session 1: Tuesday, October 8th, 6:30pm-7:30pm PST

    •  The first Q&A session will be in person in the Neuroscience Research Building (NRB) 132.

  •  Session 2: Wednesday, October 9th, 7:00pm-8:00pm PST

Application Resources

Application Process

All applicants are required to submit an online written application that will become available during each application cycle. In addition, all applicants will be required to provide at least one professional reference contact information (we encourage 2-3) in their written application. References should be someone who has worked closely with the applicant and knows them well. Professional references may include but are not limited to past professors, teachers, and employers. Once we have reviewed your application, we will then determine whether to extend you a primary interview invitation.

Applicants who are selected for a primary interview will be notified via email. Details of the interviews will be explained upon invitation.

Following the primary interviews, we will invite some applicants to return for a secondary interview. Dress code for the interviews is business professional.

Only applicants who have been offered a secondary interview will be included in our final consideration for admittance into the program.

Please Note: For prospective cohorts of incoming EMRAs, one of the Volunteer Office requirements for individuals already committed to a separate volunteer program through UCLA is that they finish their minimum commitment within this program before beginning their on-boarding with EMRA. This means that if you are currently part of or have been recently admitted to other volunteer programs, you have to finish your minimum commitment first before you on-board with EMRA (by the end of the application quarter). We ask that you keep this in mind when applying to EMRA. Our program does not accept ‘program-hopping’ and our contract clearly states that a new member’s acceptance is contingent on completing all other UCLA volunteer program requirements.
