Our faculty have a long track-record and continue to publish a variety of landmark, practice-changing papers​ and lead ​preeminent​ national research networks​. 

  • ​​Dr​s​. Jerome Hoffman (Class of 1979)​ and​ William Mower (Class of 1990)​ ​​introduced the NEXUS C-Spine Rule​,​ now successfully externally validated and taught as part of a standard trauma curriculum in medical schools and residencies nationwide. ​​​ 
  • ​​Dr. Larry Baraff published groundbreaking research that helped define our current approach to pediatric fever​​ and Drs. Cooper and Hoffman have published noteworthy CDC principles for management and approach to URI and pharyngitis.​​​     ​​​​ 
  • ​​​Our Department Chair, Dr. ​Greg Hendey​, introduced the “Captain Morgan” technique for hip dislocation along with several papers on shoulder dislocation.​​ 
  • ​​​​​​Dr​s​. ​​David Talan​ and ​Greg​ Moran ​​​founded​ Emergency ID-Net – a consortium of 20 different institutions funded by the CDC to survey emerging infectious diseases in the United States. ​They also lead the CODA trial comparing the treatment of appendicitis with antibiotics vs surgery​​ and their rese​arch surrounding skin and soft tissue infections, MRSA and animal bites were all foundational to the field of Emergency Medicine​​​.  ​​     ​​​​ 
  • ​​​​Dr. David Schriger (Class of 1989) also serves as an Associate Editor at JAMA and has been co-authors on numerous reporting guidelines (e.g. CONSORT and SPIRIT) and has one of the most downloaded papers in Annals of EM (Kaji AH, Schriger D, Green S. Looking through the retrospectoscope: reducing bias in emergency medicine chart review studies.)​​​ 
  • ​​​​Our faculty are involved in large national research networks, including SIREN, PETAL, ToXIC, and STRIVE.​​​

  • ​​​​Dr. ​​Mel Herbert​​ (Class of 1995) founded ​​EM:RAP​​, the popular Essentials of Emergency Medicine course, and HIPPO-EM. ​​​​​
  • ​​​​​Dr. Jerry Hoffman (Class of 1979, our first graduation year), one of the founders of Emergency Medical Abstracts, has delivered thousands of hours of CME courses around the world.​​

  • ​​​​Drs. Richelle Cooper (Class of 1998), Lynne McCullough ​​(Class of 1998), Kelli O'Laughlin,​​ and Breena Taira have all been ​​recipients​​ of numerous SAEM Academy for Women in Academic Emergency Medicine (AWAEM) Awards.​​​
  • ​​​​Drs. Breena Taira and Medell Briggs-Malonson were both recognized as EMRA 25 Under 45 Honorees.​​​
  • ​​​​Dr. Robert Rodriguez (Class of 1994) Recognized with ACEP’s 2024 Award for Outstanding Contribution in Research as well as an ADIEM (Academy for Diversity and Inclusion in Emergency Medicine) legacy award.​​​
  • ​​​​Dr. Theresa Cheng, MD, JD (Class of 2021) was the ​​recipient​​ of the SAEM Arnold P. Gold Foundation Humanism in Medicine Award. ​​​
  • ​​​​Dr. Anna Yap, MD (Class of 2022) has been deeply involved in advocacy and policy work with the AMA and CMA and has been recognized by ACEP (Golden Blade Award) and CalACEP (House of Medicine Award).​​​
  • ​​​​Dr. Sara Crager (Class of 2015) has been a leader in critical care medicine and an international speaker across a range of conferences. She also served as an Annals of Emergency Medicine Resident Fellow and has been pushing the bounds on critical care education (check out her website: https://www.icuedu.org)!​​​​​​​
  • ​​​Dr. Paul Auerbach (Class of 1980) was a pioneer of wilderness medicine and wrote the definitive textbook for the specialty. ​​ 
  • ​​​Dr. Pamela Dyne served as national president of​​ CORD​​ ​​(​​the Council of Residency Directors in Emergency Medicine​​)​​ between 2005-2007.​​ 
  • ​​​Winners of the ACEP national Education Award include​​​:​​​ Drs. ​Jerry Hoffman, Paul Auerbach, Jeff Tab​a​s​, and ​Mel Herbert​.  ACEP Faculty Teaching Award winners include ​Mel Herbert, Fred Abrahamian​, Maureen McCollough, Eric Isaacs (Class of 1994). ​​ 
  • ​​​Winners of the ACEP national Research Award include​​:​​ Drs. ​Daniel Spaite​ (Class of 1986) and ​Robert Rodriguez​ (Class of 1994).​​

  • Several of the UCLA Emergency Medicine faculty have been recognized as outstanding educators in the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA. Winners of the “Excellence in Education Award” include: Drs. Tomer Begaz, ​Alan Chiem, ​Eric Savitsky (Class of 1995), and Baxter Larmon. Dr​s​. Tom Graham (Class of 1995)​ and Alan Chiem​ ​have ​won the Serge & Yvette Dadone Clinical Teaching Award.

  • ​​​Dr. ​​Haig Aintablian​ (Class of 2022) ​was​ the AAEM/RSA President.​​​ 
  • ​​​​Dr. Kenneth Kim (Class of 2025) served on numerous EMRA committees including: EMRA Health Policy Committee, EMRA Medical Student Council, and the CalEMRA Medical Student Council.​​​ 
  • ​​​​Dr. Anna Yap (Class of 2022) served on numerous committees including: AMPAC Board of Directors, Los Angeles County Medical Society Board of Directors, California ACEP Board of Directors, and the Governing Council of the California Medical Association Resident and Fellows Section to name a few. ​​​

  • ​​​​Drs. ​​Mark Morocco (Class of 2001)​​, ​​Mel Herbert​​ (Class of 1995), Greg Moran  (Class of 1992), Fred Einesman (Class of 1982) and ​​Joseph Sachs​​ (Class of 1990) were writers or medical advisors for the TV show ​​“ER”,​​ which ran for 15 seasons from 1994-2009.​​​ 
  • ​​​​Drs. Joseph ​​Sachs​​, ​​Jacob Lentz​​ (Class of 2019), ​​Elizabeth Ferreira​​ (Class of 2022), ​​Greg Moran​​, Fred Einesman, and ​​ Mel Herbert ​​are currently writers and technical advisors for the popular, Emmy-winning show, ​​“The Pitt”.​​     ​​​ 
  • ​​​​Dr. Mark Morocco ​​has advised, written or supervised on over 150 episodes of TV, 15 medical show pilots and movies. ​​​ 
  • ​​​​Dr. Joshua Troke (Class of 2015) has written for numerous TV shows including Code Black, The Resident, Good Sam and Pulse.​​​​​
