About the UCLA Global Health and Medical Education Fellowship

The UCLA Global Health and Medical Education Fellowship is a one- to two-year advanced training program designed to equip emergency physicians with the skills and experience necessary to become leaders in global emergency care. Based at UCLA’s Department of Emergency Medicine, the fellowship integrates academic rigor, fieldwork, research and mentorship to advance health equity and improve emergency care globally.

Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center

The Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center (RRMC) is located at the southern end of the beautiful UCLA campus in Westwood. It is a state-of-the-art 520 bed academic medical center that offers a full range of medical and surgical services from primary to sub-specialty care. The one million-plus square foot, 10-story structure encompasses the operations of Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center, the Stewart and Lynda Resnick Neuropsychiatric Hospital at UCLA and the Mattel Children's Hospital. UCLA is consistently rated in the top 10 medical centers in the country by US News and World Report. The 41-bed Emergency Department treats 52,000 patients per year and serves as a Level 1 Trauma center, as well as Comprehensive Stroke, STEMI, and Pediatric Critical Care center. There are also hyperbaric chambers on campus.

Olive View-UCLA Medical Center

Olive View-UCLA Medical Center is a public safety net hospital serving the two million residents living in the San Fernando Valley, located at the northern section of Los Angeles County. OV-UCLA is a major teaching affiliate of the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA with medical students, residents, and fellows spending a significant portion of their training at OV-UCLA. Residents of the UCLA Emergency Medicine residency program spend 50% of their training at OV-UCLA. The hospital has 377 beds, while the 25,000 square foot Emergency Department, which was built in 2011, has 51 beds. The ED census is roughly 60,000 patients per year. The majority of patients are working poor, immigrants, and/or primarily Spanish-speaking.

Santa Monica-UCLA Medical Center

Santa Monica-UCLA Medical Center (SMMC) is a 265-bed full-service community hospital. Located in beautiful Santa Monica, it serves as a center of excellence for orthopedic surgery, pediatrics, obstetrics, STEMI, and recently became a stroke center. The hospital became part of UCLA Health in 1995. The ED is a busy, efficient community practice, serving 50,000 patients per year in a modern 22-bed facility. Attendings supervise medical students in the ED. While residents do not rotate through the ED at this time, residents and fellows from other services (e.g., orthopedics, obstetrics, surgery) are available to perform real-time consultations in the ED.

Antelope Valley-UCLA Medical Center

Antelope Valley Medical Center (AVMC) is a public, non-profit hospital in Lancaster, CA. The AVMC ED treats more than 130,000 adult and pediatric patients annually, one of the top ten busiest EDs in the entire nation. It is a level II trauma center, STEMI receiving center, advanced primary stroke center, EDAP, base station for paramedic operations, with multi-specialty call panel available 24/7. The ED is staffed by a highly stable, independent, physician owned group with one-on-one scribes working alongside providers. AV constantly hosts learners in the ED, as the only community training site for UCLA emergency medicine residents, in addition to hosting learners from UCLA NP, USC PA, and AV College Nurses and Paramedic students. Our patients are often challenged by low income and poor health, providing us an opportunity to care for a population most in need.

Curriculum

In-Person EM Training & Teaching

Fellows will travel to partner institutions to provide direct instruction and offer hands-on EM training. 

 Current partner sites include: 

  • Aga Khan Hospital in Nairobi, Kenya
  • Living Room Hospital in Eldoret, Kenya
  • Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital in Eldoret, Kenya
  • University of Global Health Equity in Kigali, Rwanda

Curriculum Development and Evaluation

Work with local faculty to design, adapt, and implement emergency medicine curricula used to teach international medical students and residents. Support implementation evaluation process through scholarly work to improve curricula, learner experience, and dissemination of results within the broader global EM community. Examples of previous published projects include:

  • 2 year Emergency Medicine curriculum for the family medicine residency program and Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital in Kenya
  • 7-week curriculum for the University for Global Health Equity in Rwanda

Remote Education

Maintain ongoing connections with partners through remote lectures, case-based teaching, mentorship, and curricular updates. Currently, regular remote lecture activities include:

  • Biweekly Zoom sessions with family medicine residents at Moi Teaching and Living Room Hospital staff in Eldoret, Kenya
  • Zoom lectures with EM diploma students at Aga Khan Hospital in Nairobi, Kenya

Partnership Building

Collaborate with UCLA’s robust Graduate Medical Education Global Health Program (GHP), the EM:RAP Global Outreach team, international medical schools and residency programs, as well as Emergency Medicine leaders across the world.

Professional Development

Opportunities to participate in formal education to augment fellowship work, such as a Master in Public Health. Fellows will participate in UCLA GME GHP orientation training and apply to attend the Health Emergencies in Large Populations (H.E.L.P.) course at the University of Geneva in Geneva, Switzerland. 

UCLA Resident & Faculty Involvement

Facilitate the involvement of UCLA residents and faculty in global health initiatives, electives, and partnerships. 

Clinical Emergency Medicine

Fellows will work on average 8 clinical shifts a month at one of the following UCLA (or UCLA associated) clinical sites:

  • Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center
  • Olive View-UCLA Medical Center
  • Santa Monica-UCLA Medical Center
  • UCLA West Valley
  • Antelope Valley Medical Center

Fellows interested in additional domestic clinical emergency medicine experiences, for example, with the Indian Health Service (IHS), may inquire with the fellowship director.
