The main goals for learners on our POCUS rotation are:

  1. To understand the many uses of POCUS to help diagnose and manage patients with acute medical presentations.
  2. To develop core POCUS skills and sufficient supervised practice that will allow learners to develop competency in POCUS.
  3. To have the confidence to continue to develop their POCUS skills after the rotation, with the ultimate goal of practicing medicine independently with POCUS included in their skillset, at the conclusion of their clinical training.

Here are some key elements of our POCUS rotation:

  1. We use a blended curriculum, in which learners are primarily responsible for completing our online curriculum, including assessments on ~10 core topics on our QStream platform.
  2. We teach POCUS through faculty-supervised scan shifts that emphasize practice of image acquisition, image interpretation, and clinical integration. We often provide clinical consultation to our ED primary teams by performing POCUS studies that are used in clinical decision-making
  3. Our POCUS rotation often combines students and residents, which allows for opportunities to learn and teach via peer and near-peer education.
  4. Our POCUS rotation is based primarily in the Emergency Department at Olive View and Reagan UCLA.
  5. We have a weekly Zoom conference on Monday mornings that combine didactics and image review.
  6. We supplement our clinical rotation with the use of  high-fidelity ultrasound simulators, augmented reality modules, and task trainers at DGSOM and the UCLA Sim Center.
